Macguffin Co. today announced the launch of Slow Fourier, a new interactive drawing experience that transforms the movement of a user’s hand into visual patterns, sound and mathematics in real time.

Designed as a quiet, ten-minute creative reset, Slow Fourier invites people to draw freely on a phone or computer screen. As they move, their gestures become symmetrical forms and musical tones. When they pause, the app reveals the mathematics hidden inside the line, reconstructing the drawing with a chain of spinning circles while playing its harmonic character as sound.

No mathematics background — or drawing ability — is required.

“Slow Fourier is built around a simple idea: you shouldn’t have to be good at drawing or good at math to enjoy either one,” Macguffin Co. said. “You make a mark, and the app pays attention. It shows you what your hand did without grading it.”

A different kind of digital break

Slow Fourier was designed in contrast to many conventional wellness, creative and social apps. There are no points, streaks, likes, leaderboards or performance scores. Users do not create accounts, and the experience does not ask them to build a profile or feed. Instead, a session unfolds in four simple steps:

Settle. Press a breathing, circular button to begin.

Draw. Move anywhere on the screen. Symmetry turns the gesture into an evolving pattern while the line produces sound.

Pause. Watch the app reconstruct the stroke using its Fourier components — the mathematical building blocks of the curve — and hear those same components translated into music.

Release. When finished, let the drawing dissolve away. Nothing is saved unless the user chooses to save or share it.

The result is part drawing tool, part musical instrument and part mathematical visualization.

Making an abstract idea tangible

The Fourier transform is a mathematical technique used throughout modern technology to break complex signals into simpler components. It plays a role in audio, images, communications and countless other digital systems.

Slow Fourier turns that concept into something people can experience directly.

A smooth curve produces a relatively simple harmonic structure. A sharper, more intricate line produces a richer one. The same underlying mathematical information is represented visually as moving circles and audibly as sound.

In other words, users do not simply read about the mathematics. They draw it.

Designed for privacy and sharing

Slow Fourier runs directly on the user’s device using browser-based graphics and audio technology. The current product does not require an account or store a library of user drawings.

Its sharing system is also intentionally lightweight. A shared Slow Fourier link can contain the mathematical information needed to reconstruct a drawing rather than pointing to a stored file on a central server.

When another person opens the link, their device can rebuild the form and sound from that information — then invite them to draw something of their own.

Macguffin Co. sees that handoff as an important part of the product: the shared object is not simply something to look at, but the beginning of another interactive session.

Built for curiosity, not competition

Slow Fourier is intended for a broad audience, including people interested in drawing, music, mathematics, creative technology and simple ways to step away from conventional feeds.

The product takes inspiration from doodling, generative art, mathematical visualization, ambient sound and the broader “slow” movement.

Its guiding design principle is descriptive, never evaluative.

The app may tell a user how far their hand traveled, how much it turned or how many harmonics appeared in a line. It does not tell them whether the drawing was good.

“The mathematics is there to notice, not judge,” Macguffin Co. said.

Future concepts under consideration include a shared daily drawing prompt called Today’s Curve, embeddable versions for articles and educational features, and curated visual and musical editions.
